The Ondo State Security Network Agency, Amotekun Corps, reports that 80% of convicts in state correctional facilities were apprehended by its operatives, attributing the high rate to rigorous investigations and prosecutions that have overwhelmed the judicial system.
State Commander Mr. Adetunji Adeleye revealed this in a Sunday interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), explaining that the volume of arrests necessitated collaboration with courts. “We not only investigate, but the law permits us to investigate and prosecute. We do thorough investigations and take the criminals to courts of competent jurisdiction, and get them prosecuted,” Adeleye stated.
"...so many of these convicts are in various correctional centres in the state, and those criminals we prosecute are much more in number than other agencies.” - Adeleye
Adeleye noted Ondo’s security landscape before Amotekun’s inception in 2020, launched under late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu to counter rising crime amid a centralized policing gap. The region faced rampant robbery and kidnapping, prompting the Western Nigeria Security Network’s formation across six southwest states.
In Ondo, initial challenges included untraceable motorcycle crimes and unsafe evenings. He credits a nighttime okada ban—enforced after surveys showed 70% of crimes involved motorcycles—for an 80% drop in urban crime, despite hardships.
